After posting yesterday I did a little more research on a little WordPress extension called Akismet. Akismet takes incoming comments that are posted to your weblog and compares them to a worldwide database of known spam messages. If the comment matches it’s set aside from more “legitimate” comments and held for deletion. Essentially, Akismet is the Norton anti virus of the WordPress world. 

Suffice it to say that the utility works like a champ. In the last 24 hours Akismet has set aside 224 spam messages for deletion (yes, I was receiving MANY spam messages in my comments). Now that I have this setup I can turn comments back on in my newest posts and rest assured that my inbox will not be swamped with incoming spam messages about the power of Viagra and nipple rings.
