Exhausted, Annoyed and Overjoyed
Exhausted - After a three hour drive, two hours of sleep and eight hours at An Event Apart Seattle I’ve finally returned to my little hotel room to crash out. Sadly, the crashing portion of my day has not quite taken hold yet, but I’m sitting here anxiously awaiting its arrival. When it comes I will wrap my arms around it, giving it a breath-stealing embrace, quickly followed by a big, sloppy kiss.
Annoyed - I returned from AEA thinking that I’d taken some great shots of the event only to find out that most of them came out blurry and full of noise because of the low light levels I was shooting in all day.
I’ve recently picked up a Nikon Coolpix S9 so I don’t need to carry my D50 with me all the time. While I thought I had a grasp on the various modes of this little point and shoot, I apparently have more reading to do. Grrrr…
Overjoyed - The first day of An Event Apart Seattle was a blast. The speaking lineup was great. The highlight of the day was most definitely Tim Bray and his thoughts on the web. Here are a couple of the more memorable quotes from his talk:
Web 2.0 is kind of a gross term adopted by venture capitalists.
Tim’s not a big “Web 2.0” fan at all.
I’m not a user. I’m a husband, a father, a programmer, and a photographer. It’s not content. It’s my life.
He also seems to have a real disdain for being viewed as a mere user who simply generates content that is then dumped into the amorphous, internet hole.
He rightly sees himself as a person helping to build, add and enrich a gigantic social network. In this area, I think Tim is so right on. Society is in the throes of developing and shaping the most important communication tool that’s ever been invented. We need to think about that.
Some of us are the architects of large portions of this dynamic space, while others are helping to round out the edges. Whatever our contributory status is, there are millions of us adding to this endeavor, whether it be personal or professional, on a daily basis. We are the living web.
